History

The House of Madeira’s People History.

Get better acquainted with the Madeira Regional Archives (ARM), an institution that houses the memories of the administration of the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo from the dawn of their settlement to the rise of the process of autonomy in the 20th century. Come and do research to be informed about our history and better understand our identity as an insular territory and the contribution to the expansion, construction and consolidation of the Portuguese Atlantic made by a piece of land so small in relation to the ocean surrounding it. Here are some of the dates that mark decisive moments in the history of this institution.

1862 and 1886: Incorporation in the National Archives of various batches that are valuable to the study of the history of the archipelago of Madeira – documents from the Funchal Customs House, the Chapter of the Cathedral, the convents of Santa Clara and N.ª Sr.ª da Encarnação, the Purveyor’s Office and the Board of the Royal Treasury.

1931: Creation of the Funchal District Archives, within the scope of a broad reform of the Portuguese archival system. The local authorities are charged with the task of preserving and communicating the regional archival heritage.

1933: The District Archives is installed in the Palácio de S. Pedro, near the church of S. Pedro and various museums, in the heart of the historic centre of Funchal.

1980: The beginning of a decade in which the Archives receives a new name – Madeira Regional Archives – and added responsibilities in the development of the regional archival policies.

1998: MRA is constituted as the body for the management of the Archives of RAM. Later, legislation is passed instituting the Regional System of Archives and affirming the role of ARM in the archives of the Administration.

1999: Publication of the report on the Survey of the Public Archives in RAM (1996/97).

2004: Inauguration of the new building located at Álamos, near the University of Madeira and integrated in the Madeira Tecnopolo complex, an urbanisation plan to promote scientific and technological research.

2005: In April, the collections of ARM began to be transferred to the new building.
Our services opened to the public in October.
Former directors of the Archives:
Dr. João Cabral do Nascimento, who with curator Álvaro Manso de Sousa founded the bulletin Arquivo Histórico da Madeira;
Dr. José Pereira da Costa, who continued the task of gathering and acquiring documentation of interest, effected the first ordering of the documentation centres, the first inventories, and was named as a consultant for the realisation of the project of the new building;
Dr. Aragão Mendes Correia, who launched "Série Documental" of the bulletin of the Funchal District Archives, disseminating sources for the history of Madeira;
Dr. Luís de Sousa Melo, who transcribed the first Register of the General Registry of the Funchal City Hall and strove to improve the access to the most requested information, preparing various files and summaries of documents;
The current director, Dr.ª Fátima Araújo de Barros Ferreira, who since 1997 is in charge of the process of modernisation of the Regional Archives, advancing the implementation of the Regional System of Archives and the restructuring of the services in light of the move to the new building; expanded the bulletin in the series Indexes of Passports, Indexes of Parochial Records, Descriptive Instruments and Document Transcriptions.

To modernise and certify the quality of service is the overall objective of the current Administration of the ARM.
