Educational and Cultural Activities / Use of the Auditorium and other Spaces
Presentation of the Educational Services/ Cultural Extension
The Educational Services/Cultural Extension was created because of the work conditions provided by the new buildings of the Madeira Regional Archives ARM) and the decision to give, not just the traditional reader, but also a different public audience the opportunity to get to know this institution.
The Educational Service was created to make contact with the public schools. Dynamic initiatives are promoted, both permanent and temporary in nature, built around subjects like genealogy and emigration, for example. They can also give guided tours or organize actions for the schools and institutions of higher learning, in accordance with their requests.
Another form of disseminating the functions of the documentary assets of the ARM is the “Jornal Aprendiz de Arquivo” (Journal of the Archive Apprentice), published once a semester.
Cultural Extension
In regard to the Cultural Extension, the aim is to develop activities of a scientific nature and cultural scope, specifically training actions, debates, conferences and expositions. These alone will attract a large heterogeneous group, and there are seminars, besides.
In this sense, the Archive’s ambition is to assert itself in the Autonomous Region of Madeira with a renewed cultural service, contributing to the formation of a community more critical and alert to the surrounding reality, making the public aware of the need to conserve documents as an integral part of the collective memory.
It is important also, that any and all activities developed in this service are not extraneous to the archives, but rather, that all of them be a reflection of its functions.
In summary, the development of activities of the Educational Services/Cultural Extension of the Madeira Regional Archives will certainly inculcate a taste for the knowledge of the regional and local history and will, in the mid-term, give rise to the idea that the archival work is important for the cultural and civic formation of the common citizen.
